You may have already caught someone close to you mumbling, laughing… or even speaking in full sentences while asleep. This phenomenon, called somniloquy, is as intriguing as it is amusing. But where does it really come from, and what does it reveal about our sleeping brain?

 

A phenomenon more common than you might think

Talking in one’s sleep affects around 5% of adults and up to 50% of children, often without them ever realizing it. These words can range from simple murmurs or groans to full conversations, sometimes incoherent, sometimes surprisingly clear.

 

When does it happen?

Somniloquy can occur during any stage of sleep, but it’s most frequent during light sleep or REM sleep. In REM sleep, when dreams are most vivid, the brain is highly active. In some people, this activity can “overflow,” activating the muscles involved in speech, which leads to words being spoken even while asleep.

 

Is it linked to our dreams?

Sometimes, yes: the words spoken can be directly related to dreams, as a reaction or a phrase addressed to a dream character. But not always: it can also happen that these words make no sense or have no direct connection to any identifiable dream content.

 

Should we worry?

In the vast majority of cases, talking in your sleep is harmless and temporary. It doesn’t indicate a serious disorder or psychological problem. However, if it is accompanied by other, more intense nighttime behaviors (like shouting, sudden movements, or sleepwalking), it might be helpful to consult a sleep specialist.

 

The role of calm sleep

Stress, fatigue, or an uncomfortable environment can make somniloquy more likely. Creating the right conditions for deep, restful sleep can help reduce these episodes.
