Cotton percale is a tightly woven plain weave: smooth, matte and fine to the touch, and strong enough to wash at 60 °C. At Zizzz all three parts of your bedding come in this fabric – duvet covers, fitted sheets and pillowcases – in GOTS-certified organic cotton, sewn in Portugal.
What is cotton percale?
Percale is a weave, not a fibre. In a plain weave each thread passes alternately over and under the crossing thread – the simplest and tightest weave there is. The result depends on the fineness of the yarn and the thread count: our percale has 220 threads per square inch (220 TC).
The result is a fabric that feels crisp and matte, with no sheen, and lets air through. It absorbs moisture and releases it again, which makes it especially pleasant on warm nights – and it softens with every wash without losing its body. See also our tips for sleeping better on hot nights.
Percale or satin?
Do you like a crisp, airy bed? Choose percale.
Do you prefer smooth, soft and enveloping? Choose satin.

And renforcé? It is also a plain weave, but with a coarser yarn and a lower thread count, so it feels slightly rougher. We only make percale and satin.

Colours in the percale range
The duvet covers and pillowcases are two-tone and reversible: white and grey, white and beige, beige and grey, white and teal, beige and teal, and grey and teal – plus two white models with a trim, in beige or navy blue. The fitted sheets are plain white, beige, grey and teal, so you can match the sheet to either side of the cover.
GOTS-certified organic cotton
Our percale bedding is made from GOTS-certified organic cotton. The Global Organic Textile Standard combines certified organic fibres with strict environmental and social requirements for textile processing, and it covers the whole production chain up to the finished product – not just the growing of the cotton.
Care: washing, drying, ironing
Percale can be washed at up to 60 °C. Close the zip on duvet covers before washing so it keeps its shape. Ironing is usually unnecessary: hang the bedding well shaken out, or put it straight back on the bed from the dryer.

What is percale?

What does 220 TC mean?
TC stands for thread count, the number of threads per square inch. Our percale has 220 TC: dense enough for a smooth, durable surface and open enough to stay breathable.
Percale or satin – which is right for me?
Percale feels crisp, matte and airy and suits people who like to sleep cool. Satin is smooth, soft and has a slight sheen, and feels more enveloping. Both are made from certified organic cotton.
What is the difference between percale and renforcé?
Both are plain weaves. Renforcé uses a coarser yarn and a lower thread count, so it feels slightly rougher. Percale uses a finer yarn and more threads, which makes it smoother and finer. We only make percale and satin.
Does percale need ironing?
Usually not. Hang it well shaken out or put it straight back on the bed from the dryer and it falls smoothly. Percale gets softer with every wash.
