What is special about the 65 × 100 cm pillow format?
65 × 100 cm is a traditional Swiss pillow format and is especially common in German-speaking Switzerland.
In Switzerland this format is often called a Pfulmen. The Swiss word describes a large, wide pillow in general; the bedding trade uses it particularly often for 65 × 100 cm.
At Zizzz, 65 × 100 cm is also the largest rectangular pillow format: larger than 60 × 90 cm and considerably larger than 50 × 70 cm. If you prefer a square pillow, there is 65 × 65 cm.
For sleeping comfort, though, the surface of the pillow is only one factor. Pillow height, support, sleeping position and personal preference matter more.
Which 65 × 100 cm pillow for side, back or front sleepers?
The right pillow height depends more on sleeping position, shoulder width and mattress than on the size of the pillow itself. Side sleepers usually need more height, so that the gap between shoulder and head is filled. Back sleepers are generally comfortable with a medium height, while front sleepers tend to prefer a flatter pillow. There is more on this in our article on choosing the right pillow size.
On the Swisswool pillow the height can be adjusted independently of the large 65 × 100 cm format: you take out or top up wool balls until the height and the support suit your sleeping position.
The two down pillows have a fixed fill quantity.
Goose down or duck down in 65 × 100 cm?
Both down pillows have the same composition: 85 % feathers and 15 % down, DOWNPASS and NOMITE certified, with a cover in organic cotton batiste. The difference lies in the species, in the origin and processing of the filling, in the fill weight and in how they feel.
The goose down pillow is made in Canton Bern and contains 1200 g of goose feathers and down. It feels particularly soft and plump.
The duck down pillow is made in the Black Forest and, at 1350 g, has the highest fill weight of the three Zizzz pillows in this format. It feels soft, but lies a little more compactly than the goose version.
What are the 65 × 100 cm pillows made of?
Swisswool consists of 88 % Swiss virgin wool and 12 % plant fibres. The wool balls in the inner pillow can be taken out or topped up, so you can set the pillow height yourself. More about Swisswool.
Both down pillows contain 85 % feathers for structure and support and 15 % down for softness and plumpness. Both fillings are DOWNPASS and NOMITE certified. More about down pillows.
How do I wash a 65 × 100 cm pillow?
Wool pillow: take out the inner pillow and wash the outer shell, quilted with Swisswool, at 30 °C on the wool cycle. The inner pillow with the wool balls does not need to be washed in normal use; airing it regularly is usually enough. Our five-step guide explains how to dry a pillow without a tumble dryer.
Both down pillows: machine washable at 60 °C. What matters is that the filling dries through completely before you use the pillow again. The fill quantities are the highest in the range in this format, so check beforehand that the drum is big enough and allow plenty of drying time. If the care label permits it, a few clean dryer or tennis balls in the tumble dryer help to loosen the filling again.
Frequently asked questions about 65 × 100 cm pillows
What is a Pfulmen?
Pfulmen is a Swiss word for a large, wide pillow. In the Swiss bedding trade today the 65 × 100 cm format in particular is often called a Pfulmen.
Is 65 × 100 cm a Swiss pillow size?
Yes. 65 × 100 cm is a traditional Swiss pillow format and is especially common in German-speaking Switzerland. In Suisse romande, formats such as 60 × 60 and 60 × 90 cm are also widely offered. If you own bed linen in this size you are in the right place: Zizzz carries 65 × 100 cm with all three fillings, and matching pillowcases.
What are the fill weights of the three pillows?
Wool pillow 1100 g, goose down pillow 1200 g, duck down pillow 1350 g. On the wool pillow the quantity can be changed using the wool balls in the inner pillow.
Can the height of a 65 × 100 cm pillow be adjusted?
On the Swisswool pillow, yes: the inner pillow contains loose wool balls that you can take out or top up. On the two down pillows the height is fixed.
What is the difference between 65 × 100 cm and 60 × 90 cm?
65 × 100 cm is ten centimetres longer and five centimetres wider than 60 × 90 cm. Both are large rectangular Swiss pillow formats. 65 × 100 cm is the one usually associated with the word Pfulmen, while 60 × 90 cm is also widely offered in Switzerland. A 60 × 90 cm pillowcase does not fit a 65 × 100 cm pillow. Zizzz offers both formats with all three fillings — you will find the 60 × 90 cm selection here.
Are the 65 × 100 cm pillows suitable for people allergic to house dust?
Both down pillows carry the NOMITE label. The densely woven cotton batiste forms a barrier against house dust mites. The wool pillow carries no corresponding allergy certification. Wool does, however, regulate moisture and can therefore contribute to a microclimate that is less favourable to house dust mites.
Which pillowcase do I need for a 65 × 100 cm pillow?
One in the same format, often sold as a Pfulmen case. The Zizzz 65 × 100 cm organic cotton pillowcases are available in percale and in satin.
