When nighttime temperatures no longer drop below 20°C (68°F), it is known as a tropical night. These nights are becoming increasingly common during heatwaves and can make it much harder to sleep. You may take longer to fall asleep, wake up more often during the night, and still feel tired the next morning.

Fortunately, a few simple habits can help you cope with the heat and enjoy more comfortable nights.

Why does heat disrupt our sleep?

To fall asleep, our body naturally needs to lower its core temperature. When the bedroom is too warm, this process becomes less effective. Sleep becomes lighter, nighttime awakenings become more frequent, and the amount of deep sleep decreases.

The goal is therefore to help your body cool down naturally before and during the night.

1. Keep your bedroom as cool as possible

The best strategy is to prevent heat from entering your home during the day.

Keep your blinds or curtains closed whenever the sun shines directly through the windows, then open the windows early in the morning and late in the evening when the outside air is cooler. If you use a fan, place a bowl of ice water in front of it to circulate slightly cooler air.

2. Lighten your bedding

During summer, sleeping under a duvet isn't always necessary.

A simple solution is to remove the duvet insert and use only the duvet cover. This allows you to keep the comforting feeling of having a light layer over you without the extra warmth created by the filling.

The fabric also makes a big difference. An organic cotton percale duvet cover is particularly well suited for warm nights. Its crisp, breathable weave promotes excellent airflow and provides a pleasantly cool feeling against the skin.

In fact, this is a tip we often recommend at Zizzz during heatwaves: temporarily replacing your duvet with a simple organic cotton percale duvet cover offers noticeably better comfort while preserving the pleasant feeling of sleeping under a light cover.

3. Choose natural materials

Whether it's your pajamas or your bed linen, natural fibers are generally much more comfortable in hot weather.

Organic cotton, linen, and bamboo allow the skin to breathe better and wick away moisture more effectively than many synthetic fabrics. The result is less overheating and greater comfort throughout the night.

4. Cool your body before going to bed

A lukewarm shower is often more effective than a cold one. Unlike icy water, it helps your body gradually release the heat accumulated during the day.

Also remember to stay well hydrated, but avoid drinking large amounts of water immediately before bedtime to reduce the chances of waking up during the night.

5. Avoid generating unnecessary body heat

Large meals, spicy foods, or an intense workout just before bedtime all increase your body temperature.

During hot weather, choose a light evening meal and give your body time to cool down naturally before going to bed.

6. Accept that your sleep may be a little different

Even with the best tips, it's perfectly normal for sleep to be less restorative during a heatwave.

The important thing is not to add extra stress by constantly checking the time or worrying about not sleeping. The more relaxed you stay, the easier it will be to fall back asleep after waking during the night.

In summary

During tropical nights, it's often the small adjustments that make the biggest difference: keep your bedroom cool, choose breathable materials, lighten your bedding, and help your body regulate its temperature more effectively.

During periods of intense heat, sleeping with only an organic cotton percale duvet cover instead of a full duvet is both a simple and comfortable alternative. Lightweight, breathable, and pleasant to the touch, it provides a cozy feeling without trapping unnecessary heat.

With a few simple habits, it's entirely possible to get through heatwaves with more restful nights... while waiting for cooler temperatures to return.
