Sleeping with a Stuffy Nose: Why It's More Difficult

Whether it's caused by a cold, allergies, or sinusitis, a stuffy nose can quickly turn a good night's sleep into a real challenge. Difficulty breathing, frequent awakenings, and waking up with a dry mouth are just some of the ways nasal congestion can disrupt your sleep.

But why is it so much harder to sleep well when your nose is blocked?

Why does a stuffy nose disrupt sleep?

When your nose is congested, air cannot flow as easily. As a result, we tend to breathe more through our mouths, especially during the night.

However, nasal breathing plays an important role: it filters, humidifies, and warms the air before it reaches the lungs. When we breathe through our mouths instead, we may experience a dry throat, discomfort, and become more likely to wake up during the night.

Why is it often worse when lying down?

Many people notice that their nose feels even more blocked at bedtime.

When you lie down, blood circulates differently, and the tissues inside the nose can swell slightly. This increases the feeling of nasal congestion, especially if you have a cold or suffer from allergies.

This is why some people find it easier to breathe by slightly elevating their head with an extra pillow.

A few tips to sleep better

Although congestion won't disappear instantly, a few simple measures can improve your comfort during the night:

  • air out your bedroom before going to bed;
  • use a saline nasal spray to help clear your nasal passages;
  • drink enough water throughout the day;
  • avoid a bedroom that is too warm or too dry;
  • slightly elevate your head if it helps you breathe more comfortably.

If your congestion is caused by allergies, reducing allergens in your bedroom may also help improve your sleep.

When should you see a doctor?

A blocked nose lasting a few days is usually caused by a common cold and typically resolves on its own.

However, if the congestion lasts for several weeks, is accompanied by severe pain, a high fever, or keeps coming back frequently, it is best to consult a healthcare professional to identify the underlying cause.

In summary

Sleeping with a stuffy nose is often more difficult because breathing becomes less efficient, causing your body to compensate by breathing more through your mouth. Lying down can also worsen congestion, leading to more frequent awakenings and less restorative sleep.

Fortunately, a few simple measures such as keeping your nasal passages hydrated, airing out your bedroom, or slightly elevating your head, can often make your nights more comfortable while you wait for the congestion to clear.
