You're comfortably settled in bed, your eyes begin to close... then suddenly, your body jerks as if you were falling into thin air. This surprising sensation is often accompanied by the feeling of falling, stumbling, or losing your balance.
Don't worry, this phenomenon is extremely common and, in the vast majority of cases, completely normal. These involuntary muscle contractions have a scientific name: hypnic jerks, also known as sleep starts.
What exactly is happening?
Hypnic jerks occur during the transition from wakefulness to sleep. As you begin to fall asleep, your heart rate slows, your breathing becomes calmer, and your muscles gradually start to relax.
Sometimes, however, this transition isn't perfectly smooth. The brain briefly sends an electrical signal that causes one or more muscles to contract suddenly. This can affect a leg, an arm, or sometimes even the entire body.
Although the sensation can be startling, it lasts only a fraction of a second.
Why does it sometimes feel like you're falling?
Many people associate these sudden jerks with a dream in which they trip, fall from a step, or lose their balance.
Researchers believe this sensation occurs because the brain interprets the rapid relaxation of the muscles as a loss of stability. It then briefly creates the illusion of falling, immediately followed by the muscle jerk.
This feeling is so common that it is considered one of the most universal experiences associated with falling asleep.
Is it normal?
Yes. It's estimated that 60 to 70% of adults experience hypnic jerks from time to time, although many people don't remember them.
Some people experience them only a few times a year, while others may notice them several times a week.
As long as these jerks remain occasional and don't significantly disrupt your sleep, they are considered a completely normal physiological phenomenon.
Why are they more common at certain times?
Several factors seem to increase the likelihood of hypnic jerks.
Stress
When your nervous system is under significant stress, the brain may have more difficulty transitioning smoothly from wakefulness to sleep. As a result, hypnic jerks may become more frequent.
Fatigue
Ironically, sleep deprivation can also increase their frequency. The more exhausted your body is, the more abrupt the transition into sleep can become.
Caffeine
Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and even chocolate consumed late in the day can keep the brain in a more alert state, making these small muscle jerks more likely.
Late-night exercise
Working out just before bedtime keeps the body activated. For some people, this can make the process of falling asleep more restless.
Can you prevent hypnic jerks?
There isn't a miracle cure, but a few simple habits can often help reduce them.
Try to:
keep a regular bedtime schedule;
avoid caffeine and other stimulants late in the day;
set aside some quiet time before going to bed;
limit screen time just before bedtime;
avoid building up excessive sleep debt over several days.
These habits help promote a smoother transition between wakefulness and sleep.
Should you be concerned?
In the overwhelming majority of cases, no.
Hypnic jerks are harmless and are not a sign of a neurological disease. They are different from the repetitive movements seen in certain sleep disorders and generally have no impact on your health.
However, if the movements become very frequent, unusually violent, occur throughout the night, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, loss of consciousness, or severe daytime fatigue, it's best to consult a healthcare professional.
In summary
Sudden jerks just before falling asleep are a natural phenomenon that most of us will experience at least once in our lives. They are simply a small "timing mismatch" between the brain and the muscles as the body transitions into sleep.
Although the sensation of falling can be surprising, it is usually completely harmless. By adopting a relaxing bedtime routine and reducing stress and fatigue, these muscle jerks often become less frequent... and you'll usually drift back to sleep almost immediately.
