REM Sleep Explained Simply

Sleep is not a period when the brain simply "switches off." On the contrary, it alternates between several different stages, each with a specific role. Among them, REM sleep is undoubtedly the most fascinating.

It is during this phase that we experience most of our dreams… but it is also when our brain is particularly active.

What is REM sleep?

REM sleep is one of the main stages of sleep. Its name may seem unusual, but it is easy to understand: the brain is almost as active as when we are awake, while the body itself is almost completely still.

In other words, the brain is working intensely while the muscles temporarily enter a state of "rest." This natural paralysis prevents us from physically acting out the movements we experience in our dreams.

When does it occur?

A night of sleep is made up of several cycles lasting around 90 minutes each.

Each cycle includes light sleep, deep sleep, and then a phase of REM sleep. At the beginning of the night, this phase is relatively short. As the hours pass, it becomes longer. This is why the longest and most vivid dreams often occur just before waking up.

Why is it important?

REM sleep plays an essential role in the proper functioning of the brain.

Researchers believe it contributes to:

  • consolidating memories;
  • supporting learning;
  • processing emotions experienced during the day;
  • stimulating creativity and problem-solving.

Although many mechanisms are still being studied, one thing is certain: this phase is essential for our overall balance.

Can you lack REM sleep?

Yes. Sleeping too little, having regularly interrupted sleep, or following certain lifestyle habits can reduce the amount of time spent in REM sleep.

Over time, this can lead to feelings of fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or poorer mental recovery.

This is one of the reasons why getting enough sleep is so important: shortening your nights often means sacrificing part of the final REM sleep stages.

How can you encourage better quality sleep?

There is no specific method to increase REM sleep. However, adopting good sleep habits allows the brain to naturally follow its sleep cycles.

A few simple habits can make a difference:

  • go to bed and wake up at consistent times;
  • limit screen use before sleeping;
  • avoid stimulants late in the day;
  • get enough sleep every night.

In summary

REM sleep is an essential phase during which the brain remains highly active while the body is almost completely relaxed. It is the time when we dream the most, but also when the brain consolidates memories, processes emotions, and supports many important functions that contribute to our overall well-being.

Even though we are not aware of it, this phase plays a valuable role every night, helping us wake up feeling rested, focused, and ready to face a new day.
