If you are allergic to dust mites, choosing a pillow deserves a little more attention than you might think. Moisture, the filling material, the fabric of the cover and the possibility of washing the pillow all play a role.
At Zizzz, we have chosen two different approaches: sheep wool pillows, which naturally regulate moisture, and NOMITE-certified down pillows, whose tightly woven cover forms a barrier against dust mites and which can be washed at 60 °C.
We will explain what distinguishes our two types of pillows, so you can choose the one that best suits your sleeping habits.
Key takeaway: our pillows are not medical devices and do not treat allergies. Their benefits lie in their materials, their ability to manage moisture and, for our down models, their NOMITE certification and washability at 60 °C.
Two approaches to bedding for people with allergies
Our wool and down pillows work in different ways.
Wool works primarily through its ability to regulate moisture. It absorbs some of the moisture produced during the night and gradually releases it back into the surrounding air. This helps keep the filling drier, contributing to a sleeping environment that is less favourable to dust mites.
Down relies more heavily on its cover. Our down pillows have a tightly woven cotton cover and carry the NOMITE label. This combination forms a natural barrier against dust mites. They can also be washed at 60 °C.
In both cases, we have made the same important choice: no chemical "anti-allergy" treatment on the filling.
Our sheep wool pillows: creating a drier sleeping environment
Wool has a particularly interesting property for sleep: it can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch.
During the night, it absorbs some of the moisture produced by the body and then gradually releases it. The filling therefore remains relatively dry.
This can be interesting for people who are sensitive to dust mites, which tend to thrive in warm and humid environments.
an outer cotton cover, quilted and filled with a layer of Swisswool;
an inner pillow, called an Inlett, made from hypoallergenic and antibacterial cotton and filled with small wool balls.
The Inlett has a zipper. You can therefore remove or add wool balls to adjust the thickness of the pillow to your sleeping position.
The main benefit for people with allergies
Wool does not attempt to eliminate dust mites through a chemical treatment. Instead, it helps to regulate moisture naturally and keep the filling drier.
The pillow can be washed on the wool cycle at 30 °C when necessary.
Our down pillows: NOMITE and washing at 60 °C
Our down pillows take a different approach.
The NOMITE label identifies feather and down bedding products whose tightly woven fabric forms a natural barrier against dust mites.
The cover therefore plays an essential role. It needs to be sufficiently dense to prevent feathers from passing through, while this density also helps keep dust mites and their residues contained.
Our down pillows are covered with a fine, silky organic cotton batiste and carry the NOMITE label.
Another important advantage is that they can be washed at 60 °C. This makes it possible to clean the pillow at a temperature particularly suited to removing dust mites and their residues.
We offer two down options:
Goose down pillow - 15% goose down and 85% goose feathers from Eastern Europe. Soft without being excessively fluffy, it is made in the canton of Bern.
Duck down pillow - 15% duck down and 85% duck feathers. It provides slightly more support and is a more economical option. It is made in Germany.
Both models are also DownPass certified: the animals are raised under responsible conditions, without live-plucking or force-feeding.
Wool or down: which should you choose?
Both can be suitable for people who are sensitive to dust mites, but their benefits are different.

You sleep hot or sweat at night
You want a soft pillow and the option to wash it at 60 °C
Do you tend to sweat at night?
Wool may be the more interesting choice. Its ability to regulate moisture is one of its main benefits.
Do you prefer a soft and fluffy pillow?
Down provides a softer, more lofty feel. Being able to wash the pillow itself at 60 °C can also be an important advantage.
Do you want to adjust the thickness?
The wool pillow offers greater flexibility thanks to its zipped Inlett. You can add or remove wool balls until you achieve the thickness that feels right for you.
What about the pillowcase?
Even the best pillow will not stay clean without a suitable pillowcase.
The pillowcase is the piece of bedding that comes into the most direct contact with your face. It therefore also accumulates sweat, skin flakes and residues.
For this reason, we recommend a tightly woven pillowcase that can be washed at 60 °C.
And most importantly: change your pillowcase more often than the rest of your bedding if you are particularly sensitive.
How should you care for our pillows?
The two types of pillows have different care requirements.
Wool pillow
The wool cycle at 30 °C is suitable when washing is necessary. A wool pillow does not need to be washed frequently: regular airing in fresh air helps keep it fresh between washes.
Down pillow
A down pillow can be washed at 60 °C. After washing, it is essential to dry it completely. A tumble dryer can be used with a few dryer balls to help the down regain its loft.
In both cases, the pillowcase is the part that deserves the most regular washing.
When are our pillows not suitable?
An allergy to dust mites and an allergy to the pillow material itself are two different things.
If you are allergic to feathers, a down pillow is not suitable, even if it carries the NOMITE label. NOMITE concerns dust mites, not allergens associated with feathers.
Likewise, if you have a true allergy to wool proteins, a wool pillow is not suitable.
Finally, severe dust mite allergies may require additional measures. Even a carefully chosen pillow does not replace medical treatment or a fully enclosed anti-dust-mite cover (encasing) when one is recommended.
We do not manufacture encasings and do not claim that our pillows can replace them.
So, which pillow should you choose?
There is no single "best pillow" for everyone with allergies.
If your priority is moisture regulation, particularly because you sleep hot or sweat at night, our Swisswool sheep wool pillow is a particularly interesting option.
If you prefer a soft and fluffy pillow and want to be able to wash the pillow itself at 60 °C, our NOMITE-certified down pillows are another possibility.
In both cases, we favour natural materials and cotton covers without chemical "anti-allergy" treatments.
All Zizzz pillows can be tried free of charge for 30 nights, with free delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Which Zizzz pillow should I choose if I have a dust mite allergy?
Both options can be suitable: the sheep wool pillow relies on natural moisture regulation, while the NOMITE-certified down pillows have a dense cover that forms a barrier against dust mites and can be washed at 60 °C.
What is the difference between a wool pillow and a down pillow?
Wool naturally regulates moisture and is particularly suitable for people who sleep hot or sweat at night. Down offers a softer feel and allows the pillow to be washed at 60 °C. The wool pillow can also be adjusted in thickness thanks to its Inlett.
What does the NOMITE label mean?
NOMITE indicates that feather and down bedding products have a sufficiently dense cover to form a natural barrier against dust mites. The label does not mean that a product is suitable for people who are allergic to feathers.
Can the pillows be washed at 60 °C?
Our down pillows can be washed at 60 °C. Our wool pillows should be washed on the wool cycle at 30 °C. In both cases, the pillowcase can be washed more regularly and at 60 °C.
Is a wool pillow suitable for people who sweat at night?
This is one of its main benefits. Wool absorbs and gradually releases moisture, which contributes to a drier sleeping climate.
Is a down pillow suitable if I have a dust mite allergy?
Yes, our down pillows are NOMITE certified and can be washed at 60 °C. However, they are not suitable for people who are allergic to feathers themselves.
Should I change my pillowcase more often if I have an allergy?
Yes. The pillowcase is in direct contact with your face and accumulates sweat, skin flakes and residues. It is therefore advisable to change it more often than the rest of your bedding and to choose a model that can be washed at 60 °C.
Are synthetic pillows better for people with allergies?
Not necessarily. A synthetic fibre is not automatically better suited to people with allergies. We favour natural fillings and avoid chemical "anti-allergy" treatments, while choosing covers that are suitable and easy to care for.
