You’ve just washed your down pillow or duvet, but instead of a fresh feeling, an unpleasant odor lingers? This is a common issue, but luckily, there are simple and effective solutions to get rid of those unwanted smells. With the right steps and proper drying techniques, your down bedding will quickly return to its softness and freshness.
Why Does My Down Pillow or Duvet Smell Bad After Washing?
Several factors can explain why your down duvet or pillow still holds an unpleasant odor after washing, even if you're using special detergent and following the temperature recommendations.
Residual Moisture in the Down One of the main causes of bad odors after washing is the moisture trapped in the feathers and down. If they are not completely dry, unpleasant smells can develop and spread throughout the room. This is why thorough drying is crucial, especially for a duvet, which is bulkier than a pillow and takes longer to dry. A common mistake is not drying the down properly after washing, which can cause lingering odors even after a tumble in the dryer.
Natural Oils in the Down Down and feathers naturally contain oils that ensure their softness and insulating properties. When exposed to water and the heat of washing or drying, these oils can release a characteristic smell. This is normal and generally dissipates with proper drying.
Accumulated Body Fluids Over time, sweat and saliva (in the case of pillows) or body heat (for duvets) can lead to residue buildup in the down. During washing, these substances mix with water and may release a stronger odor than usual. Regular washing (about twice a year for a duvet and every three to six months for a pillow) can help minimize this problem.
Poor Quality Down While less common, the quality of the down plays a key role. Low-quality down or down sourced from poorly managed animal practices may contain more impurities and retain odors. Investing in a high-quality down pillow or duvet, certified and responsibly produced, can often prevent these issues.
How to Remove Bad Odors from a Down Pillow or Duvet
Avoiding washing your pillow or duvet to prevent bad smells is not the solution. Regular maintenance is essential for ensuring the cleanliness and longevity of the down. Here are the key steps to restore freshness to your bedding after each wash.
Dry the Down Properly Proper drying is key to preventing bad odors. After washing, you have two options:
Use a Tumble Dryer: The most effective method is to dry the pillow or duvet at a low temperature, adding three clean tennis balls. These balls help break up clumps of feathers and promote an even distribution of down, speeding up the drying process. Depending on the thickness of the duvet or pillow, several cycles may be needed.
Air Dry: If you don’t have a tumble dryer, allow your pillow or duvet to dry in a well-ventilated area, ideally outside in the sun. Be aware that this method can take several days and requires turning and airing the bedding regularly to prevent moisture from stagnating.
In both cases, the pillow or duvet must be completely dry before being used again.
Air and Shake the Down Even after drying, it’s recommended to shake and massage the pillow or duvet by hand to loosen the down and prevent clumps of damp feathers from forming, which can trap odors. If you’ve chosen air drying, perform this step multiple times a day to ensure even drying.
A Fresh and Comfortable Sleep with Well-Maintained Down Bedding
If your down pillow or duvet smells bad after washing, don’t worry! By following these tips and ensuring proper drying, you’ll eliminate unpleasant odors and enjoy a fresh and pleasant bedding experience. Regular care, good-quality down, and thorough drying ensure comfortable nights without discomfort.
