The growing demand from consumers for increased transparency in textile manufacturing and better social and environmental responsibility is an encouraging sign of progress towards more conscious consumption. Today, we celebrate innovations in textiles, closed-loop recycling processes, and the rise of certification organizations. But no matter what fabric you're wearing or sleeping on, it's essential to understand exactly what it contains.
The problem is that the majority of textiles we use are treated with a mix of harmful chemicals: allergenic dyes, skin irritants, and potentially carcinogenic agents. Throughout the entire production chain of a fabric, chemicals are used at various stages: from cultivation to dyeing, through treatment and finishing. This includes pesticides, fertilizers, silicone waxes, petrochemical softeners, heavy metals, flame retardants, color fixatives, ammonia, corrosive acids, and even formaldehyde. Some certifications still allow the use of these substances, especially in the earlier stages of production.
That’s why it’s crucial to fully understand what these certifications cover and their level of requirements. Not all of them guarantee environmentally-friendly and worker-friendly practices.
Let’s take a clear and simple look at the differences between two of the main textile certifications: GOTS and OEKO-TEX.
OEKO-TEX: A Guarantee of Safety for Consumers, But Not for the Planet
OEKO-TEX certification guarantees that every component of a textile product (thread, buttons, accessories) has been tested for harmful substances and meets thresholds considered "safe" for humans. It is an improvement over conventional non-certified textiles, but it is important to note that this standard only applies to the finished product.
In other words, OEKO-TEX does not mean that the textile is organic. It permits the use of chemicals, pesticides, and dyes during the cultivation and processing of fibers. It does not provide any guarantees regarding the environmental or social impact of the manufacturing process. For example, this certification can label textiles such as viscose, transformed bamboo, or modal, although these materials require the intensive use of chemicals.
In summary, OEKO-TEX protects the end consumer but not necessarily the planet or the workers involved in the production chain.
GOTS: A Rigorous Certification from Cultivation to Manufacturing
The GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) label is recognized as the most demanding standard for organic textiles worldwide. It doesn’t just apply to the finished product; it oversees the entire production process, from seed to final product.
To be GOTS certified, a textile must meet strict criteria at every step of the supply chain. This certification takes into account the environmental impact, working conditions, and traceability of the fibers used. Unlike OEKO-TEX, GOTS ensures that the textile is truly organic and meets high social standards.
A GOTS-certified product guarantees:
No genetically modified seeds
No pesticides, insecticides, or toxic chemicals
No harmful dyes or finishes
No child labor exploitation
Fair wages and safe working conditions
Additionally, GOTS only certifies natural fibers such as organic cotton, linen, or hemp. It also guarantees that the dyes and finishing processes used are environmentally friendly and safe for human health.
Why Choose GOTS?
Choosing a GOTS-certified textile ensures not only a product that is safe for health but also has a positive impact on the environment and working conditions in the textile industry.
Products certified by GOTS, like many of Zizzz’s organic bedding items, adhere to much stricter ethical and ecological standards than those imposed by OEKO-TEX. By making this choice, you’re supporting a more transparent and sustainable production model.
After all, the more we understand certifications, the more informed our choices become. And making the right choices is acting for a healthier future, for both us and the planet.
