Why Does Sleep Become Lighter With Age?

Many people notice that as they get older, they wake up more easily during the night or feel like they do not sleep as deeply. However, this does not necessarily mean they are lacking sleep, but rather that their sleep patterns naturally change over time.

Sleep evolves throughout our lives, and these changes are a normal part of aging.

Sleep that changes over the years

Our sleep is made up of several cycles that alternate between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep.

As we age, the amount of deep sleep gradually decreases. Yet this is the most restorative sleep phase and the one during which we are the hardest to wake up.

As a result, noises, light, or small discomforts are more likely to cause us to wake up.

Why does this happen?

Researchers believe that several mechanisms are involved.

As the years go by, our biological clock changes. The brain also produces certain hormones, such as melatonin, sometimes in slightly lower amounts. Finally, natural changes in the nervous system can make sleep more fragmented.

It is therefore normal for a 70-year-old person to not sleep exactly the same way as they did at 25.

Do we wake up more often?

Yes, but this does not always mean that we sleep poorly.

Nighttime awakenings generally become more frequent with age. Many of them are very brief and may even go unnoticed. They are simply a greater part of the normal structure of sleep.

It is also common to wake up a little earlier in the morning, even after a full night of sleep.

Can we maintain good quality sleep?

Absolutely.

Even though sleep naturally becomes lighter, certain habits can help preserve its quality:

  • maintaining regular sleep schedules;
  • engaging in physical activity during the day;
  • getting natural light in the morning;
  • limiting screens and stimulants in the evening;
  • keeping your bedroom calm, dark, and comfortable;
  • choosing bedding made from high-quality materials.

These habits help promote more stable sleep, regardless of age.

When should you seek medical advice?

Lighter sleep is generally a normal part of aging.

However, if awakenings become very frequent, are accompanied by significant daytime fatigue, or occur alongside other symptoms such as heavy snoring or breathing pauses, it is recommended to speak with a healthcare professional. Some sleep disorders can be treated and significantly improve quality of life.

In summary

As we age, sleep naturally becomes lighter and more fragmented. This change is mainly explained by a gradual reduction in deep sleep and changes in our biological clock.

Even though our nights may no longer be exactly the same as they were when we were younger, it is entirely possible to maintain restorative sleep by adopting healthy lifestyle habits. The goal is not to sleep "like before," but rather to enjoy quality sleep that is adapted to our needs at every stage of life.
