The Phenomenon of “Revenge Bedtime Procrastination”: Why Do We Delay Going to Bed?

You know you should go to sleep… but you watch “just one more video,” scroll through social media, or start another episode of your favorite series. An hour later, you are still awake, even though your alarm will ring in just a few hours.

If this situation sounds familiar, you may be experiencing what is known as “revenge bedtime procrastination.”

What is it?

This phenomenon refers to intentionally delaying bedtime, even when you know you are not getting enough sleep.

The word “revenge” comes from the idea that we unconsciously try to reclaim personal time after a busy day.

After work, studies, or family responsibilities, the evening can sometimes feel like the only moment when we are truly free. We then choose to extend this feeling… at the expense of our sleep.

Why do we do this?

Contrary to what we might think, it is not simply a lack of discipline.

Bedtime procrastination often appears when our days are extremely busy and we feel like we no longer have enough time for ourselves.

Instead of going to sleep, we try to enjoy a few more minutes, which sometimes turn into several hours, watching a series, playing a video game, reading, or simply scrolling on our phones.

In the moment, it gives us a feeling of freedom. But the next morning, the lack of sleep often catches up with us.

Screens don't help…

Smartphones and streaming platforms make this habit even easier to fall into.

Videos automatically play one after another, social media feeds offer endless content, and there is always the temptation to check notifications “just one more time.”

The result: we easily lose track of time, and bedtime gets pushed back without even realizing it.

What are the consequences?

Staying up late occasionally is not a cause for concern.

However, when this habit becomes a daily routine, it can lead to:

  • persistent fatigue;
  • difficulty concentrating;
  • lower motivation;
  • increased irritability;
  • a feeling of lacking energy from the moment you wake up.

The paradox is that we try to enjoy ourselves in the evening… but then spend the following day feeling more tired.

How can you break this cycle?

The goal is not to eliminate all moments of relaxation, in fact, quite the opposite.

The ideal approach is to make time for yourself before you are completely exhausted. Even 20 or 30 minutes dedicated to an activity you enjoy can be enough to reduce the urge to “steal” time from your sleep.

It can also help to set a time when you put your phone away or activate the screen time limits available on most smartphones.

In summary

“Revenge bedtime procrastination” is an increasingly common phenomenon in our modern lives. It is not laziness, but often a sign of an imbalance between daily responsibilities and the need to have genuine personal time.

Going to bed a little earlier does not mean giving up your free time. On the contrary, getting enough sleep often gives you more energy… and ultimately allows you to enjoy your free time even more.
