Why Do Some People Remember Their Dreams So Well?

Some people can recount their dreams with great precision when they wake up, sometimes even several per night. Others, on the contrary, feel as if they never dream or immediately forget what they experienced during sleep. Yet everyone dreams. The difference mainly lies in the ability to remember those dreams.

Several factors explain why some people retain memories of their nighttime adventures while others forget them almost instantly.

Micro-awakenings During the Night

To remember a dream, it is usually necessary to wake up briefly during or just after it. These small awakenings, often very short, allow the brain to transfer the information into memory.

People whose sleep is slightly more fragmented—with a few micro-awakenings between cycles—are therefore more likely to remember their dreams. Conversely, when sleep is very deep and continuous, dreams may disappear before they are stored in memory.

The Attention Given to Dreams

The interest one takes in their dreams also plays a role. People who are curious about their inner world or used to reflecting on their dreams tend to remember them more easily.

Simply paying attention to dreams can train the brain to retain more details upon waking. Some people even keep a small dream journal, which gradually improves their ability to remember details.

The Moment of Waking Up

Most of the most vivid dreams occur during REM sleep, a phase in which brain activity is very high. If you wake up directly after this phase, the memories of the dream are still fresh and easier to retain.

On the other hand, if several sleep cycles occur after the dream, the brain may gradually erase these memories to make room for new information.

Sensitivity and Imagination

Some studies suggest that people with active imaginations or strong emotional sensitivity remember their dreams more often. Their brains may tend to process nighttime images and emotions with greater intensity.

This does not mean they dream more than others, but simply that their dreams leave a stronger trace in their memory.

A Completely Normal Phenomenon

Not remembering your dreams is perfectly normal. Even people who think they never dream actually go through several dream periods each night.

Dream memory simply depends on many small factors: sleep quality, the timing of awakenings, the attention given to dreams, and individual brain functioning.

The next time you wake up with a dream still very clear in your mind, you will know that your brain simply managed to capture a fragment of your nighttime world before it faded upon waking.
